Modular Sonobe Large Cube

This Sonobe large cube is made by assembling 12 sonobe units. As you may know, we generally use 6 units for cubes so this one is slightly different.

Origami Modular Sonobe Large Cube Step 1: Start by folding the sonobe unit.

Follow instructions on the separate page and you should have the following to start with.

Origami Modular Sonobe Large Cube Step 2: Make a diagonal mountain fold as shown. Crease well and unfold.

Origami Modular Sonobe Large Cube Step 3: Repeat Steps 1 and 2 and make a total of 12 units.

You can make 12 units of one color or use 2 colors and make a total of 6 units of each color OR use 4 colors and make a total of 3 units of each color.

We used 4 colors and made a total of 3 units of each color.

Take a unit of each color....

and arrange them like in the photo below.

Origami Modular Sonobe Large Cube Step 5: We'll start with the pale orange and blue unit.

Assemble the 2 units by inserting the blue tip into the pale orange pocket.

Origami Modular Sonobe Large Cube Step 6: Next, insert the pale orange tip into the dark orange pocket as shown.

Origami Modular Sonobe Large Cube Step 7: Insert the dark orange tip into the yellow pocket.

At the same time, also insert the yellow tip into the blue pocket to complete one face of the cube.

Origami Modular Sonobe Large Cube Step 8: Flip unit over and you can see that one side of the cube is now complete.

You can now repeat Steps 4 to 8 for the rest of the units to complete the other remaining 5 sides of the cube.
